Sesame
GLOBAL SESAME MARKET AND SESAME IN ETHIOPIA
Global sesame market is growing very rapidly. In 2011 total value of global sesame export exceeded 1.8 trillion USD which is a 113% growth from the 2005 export level.
The market is expected to grow further due to the product's wide applicability in a
number of areas including the manufacturing of bakery products, oil, confectionaries, tahini, and other sesame based food products blended with other crops and vegetables.
Currently Ethiopia is the fourth largest producer of sesame in the world next to Myanmar, China, and India and the second largest exporter next to India. Engaging more than 600,000 holders, (CSA, 2013), the sesame sector is one of the highest foreign currency earning sectors in Ethiopia. It is well known that Ethiopian sesame farming suffers from the problem of low productivity. Average sesame yield in Ethiopia is 3-5 quintal/ha and Seed shattering contributes to more than 30% pre-harvest losses.
Bio-T Square Strategy:
The business seeks to transform sesame seed using tissue culture technology and will address identified critical value chain problems, (seed shattering & extremely low yield level). Bio-T Square intends to patent the elite genotype in Ethiopia and the USA, the engine that turns the wheel of fortune. In order to make this happen, the Company is currently seeking an investment for the first phase of operations, (research and seed development stage), and also for the second phase of operations, (seed multiplication and distribution). These investment amounts will be provided in detail as we are now developing the business plan for the Company. Additional requirements include;
-
A strategic equity partner, (investor)
-
A Modern laboratory and research center, (available in either MIT or Holetta research center) - May need a modest upgrading with Holetta Research Center hewing the most preferred location
-
A buy-in from the GoE (the Ministry of Agriculture, Agricultural Transformation Agency, and others have demonstrated strong support)
-
A well planned and coordinated method to protecting contraband and illegal trade of the improved seeds (the ECX can have a great role to play here) A good system to multiply and distribute the seeds (existing GoE distribution outlets may be possible while exploring the same with strong cooperatives and unions)
Complete Proposal and Budget is available for Investor and financial Grants Donors upon request.
